Severe Thunderstorm Watch Area: Northland,Auckland,Great Barrier Island,Waikato Forecast: A front with heavy rain and embedded thunderstorms is expected to move over the northern North Island this afternoon and evening. The thunderstorms will be accompanied by heavy rain of 10-25mm/h, strong wind gust of 100km/h, and a low risk of a small tornado. For Northland, Auckland (including Great Barrier Island) and Waikato, there is also a moderate risk of localised downpours of 25-40mm/h between about 3pm and 8pm today (Friday). These downpours could occur with or without thunderstorms. Rainfall of this intensity can cause surface and/or flash flooding, especially about low-lying areas such as streams, rivers or narrow valleys, and may also lead to slips. Driving conditions will also be hazardous with surface flooding and poor visibility in heavy rain.
